Voters in Louisiana overwhelmingly supported the approval of legal sports betting. You would think that a state that puts on the Mardi Gras would have little trouble with any of the moral prohibitions that have seen other states shy away. There was zero trouble. Only nine of Louisiana’s 64 parishes voted against the measure in November of 2020. In-person betting commenced in October of 2021. Three months later, the first online sportsbooks launched. The Louisiana law permits up to 41 different mobile wagering apps. They have stolen a march on the other southeastern states, which will have residents of those neighboring states jumping in their cars and head down the Louisiana Highway across Lake Pontchartrain for a visit to Baton Rouge and Lafayette, depriving those states of money that Louisiana will gladly accept.
