A law authorizing in-person and online sports betting in Maine was passed in mid-April of 2022. It was immediately signed by the governor less than two weeks later. The state has not yet taken any online bets, but four online sportsbooks are waiting in the wings to forge agreements with the four native tribes that will oversee wagering in the state. Some details that have emerged are that the sportsbooks will pay a 10 percent tax on their revenue plus $200,000 and the tribes will be required to ante $40,000 every four years.
