The Sunshine State of Florida had legal online sports betting for the last two months of 2021. Betting was halted when a federal judge overruled and agreement that would have given the Native American Seminole tribe sole jurisdiction over the state’s betting markets. The matter is now moving glacially through the court system. An attempt was made to get sports betting on the 2022 ballot through a petition campaign. There were not enough signatures gathered to qualify for the ballot. Some experts predict that Florida will not legalize sports betting for a few years. There could be another ballot measure in 2024 or the Seminole Nation might possibly accept a reduced role, compared to the stranglehold it currently holds. A stranglehold on nothing is not exactly a great bargaining position, so it remains to be seen how the situation plays out.
